About Us and Practice History

About Us

The doctors work as a non-limited partnership and take an interest in all of the patients.

If you have a preference as to which gp or nurse you see please inform the receptionist when you book an appointment. Your preference can be recorded on our computer system for future reference if you request this. We will always endeavour to comply with your preference but it may not always be possible.

If this were the case an explanation would be offered. We would recommend that for continuity of care that you consult the same doctor for the duration of each illness.

Apart from this you are free to consult with whoever you wish. Total number of patients registered at this practice 11,041 (September 2016).

We provide services under a personal Medical Services (PMS) contract with the NHS England.

The medical centre has full access for the disabled. The medical centre, its grounds and car parks are non-smoking areas.

Our History

The practice was established over 100 years ago in the early 1900’s in central Swindon.

The location of the practice changed several times over the years and by 1950 was at 39 Regent circus. This was a large town house and the GPs working there at this time were Dr Quigley, Dr O’ Connell and Dr O’Grady. The Practice expanded and moved to Empire house on Groundwell Road which was named after the Empire theatre that had previously occupied the same site. While there Dr Nicholas, Dr Drury, Dr Alder, Dr Murthy & Dr Nath joined the practice after the retirement of the previous GPs. A branch surgery was opened in Moredon in 1948 which was initially open for only one morning per week. As the population of Moredon grew a larger purose built surgery was established at 25 to 27 Moredon Road which was used from the 1970s. It was extended over the years to reach its final size. In 1992 the main practice moved to two converted historic stone cottages next to Queens Park on Drove Road. While here Dr Griffin, Dr Godwin, Dr Davies, Dr Mills, Dr Mack, Dr Robinson, Dr Stanton (Dr Peirce), Dr Bestwick and Dr Lee joined the practice over a number of years to replace retiring GPs. Dr Griffin and Dr Lee subsequently retired early through ill health while Dr Godwin, Dr Davies, Dr Mills and Dr Bestwick moved to other practices. This left Dr Mack, Dr Robinson and Dr Pierce as the partners in the practice. The practice has employed several salaried doctors since 2002.

In relation to the practice buildings, as the twenty first century dawned and workload increased it became apparent that the surgeries at Queens Park and 25 to 27 Moredon Road were no longer adequate to deliver high quality primary care. A search for a new location to build one large medical practice rather than have 2 small ones began. A site midway between the 2 surgeries was the ideal but no suitable development site could be found over a number of years. A site on Moredon Road became available with the relocation of part of Herod Parkway school and part of the old school playing field was bought from Swindon Council. A new combined medical practice was built on this site which was opened in September 2009 and is our persent home.

The new Moredon Medical Centre has 9 consulting or treatment rooms on the ground floor, 12 consulting rooms plus a large health education room on the first floor and a large administration area. Private practioners have moved and the two private suites and part of the ground floor is occupied by local health community services.
